HIDDEN ASSEMBLY: Labor Through the Lens of Contemporary Art

November 3, 2016 - January 7, 2017

Jointly presented with the Newspace Center for Photograph and the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture at PNCA.

Hidden Assembly is a group exhibition that will reveal the hidden labor produced by the digital revolution, curated by Yaelle Amir. The starting point of Hidden Assembly is the recognition that under capitalism most production is rendered invisible. Heightened by the expanded tech field, global outsourcing, and the rise of precarious work, the labor that people perform is increasingly obscured or eliminated—replaced by clickable icons and automated responses, and embodied in the products and places that populate our surroundings. The exhibition explores how much of global labor is shrouded, and the ways in which artists have countered this erasure by foregrounding workers through identification, consumer education, and activist initiatives.
